Preview - Sheffield Wednesday

Posted on: Fri 06 Aug 2010

The opening day of the season has arrived and the Daggers first game in Npower League One is at Hillsborough against Sheffield Wednesday. Ten seasons ago the Daggers were preparing for their first game back in the Conference at Leigh RMI after winning the Ryman League title whilst Sheffield Wednesday were hosting Liverpool in their opening Premiership match.

The Owls are currently managed by Alan Irvine who took over in January this year. The past few months haven't been happy times for their supporters but despite relegation from the Championship on the last day of the season and recipients of a HMRC winding up order they have still strengthened their squad for the forthcoming season. In have come Giles Coke (Motherwell), Paul Heffernan (Doncaster Rovers), Daniel Jones (Wolverhampton Wanderers), Clinton Morrison (Coventry City), Jon Otsemobor (Southampton), Chris Sedgwick (Preston North End), Gary Teale (Derby County), Nicky Weaver (Burnley), Neil Mellor (season long loan Preston North End) whilst going through the revolving door have been Leon Clarke (Queens Park Rangers), Lee Grant (Burnley), Sean McAllister (Shrewsbury Town), Lee Molyneux (Plymouth Argyle), Frank Simek (Carlsile United), Akpo Sodje (Charlton Athletic), Etienne Esajas (released), Francis Jeffers (released), Michael Gray (retired).

The Owls have had a successful pre-season losing just twice in eight games. A 0-0 draw in Austria against USK Anif was their first game and victories against, Stockbridge Park Steels, Hallam FC, Barnsley and Doncaster Rovers followed.

The Daggers completed their pre season schedule last Monday with a 3-1 win at Billericay Town and will report to Hillsborough with no injury problems ahead of their biggest game ever. Media pundits are already condemning the Club to relegation but the camaraderie at the club has never been better and has been the platform to how far they've come in a short space of time.

The two clubs have never met before and only Ashley Vickers and Paul Shirtliff have played for both.
