Lincoln City preview

The tragic, untimely death of Keith Alexander a fortnight ago at the age of 53 won't be far from Daggers thoughts throughout this week and in the thoughts of manager John Still, particularly.

Daggers' midfield first-teamer Peter Gain who played six seasons under the late, lamented manager at Lincoln and in all of Alexander's sides that reached four play-off finals, also represented the club.

Lincoln dedicated their previous home game - a 3-1 win over Hereford United - to his memory and did their former boss proud with a 3-1 win on Friday night that attracted over 6,000 - their largest home attendance of the season.

On Saturday, Daggers host Keith's current club, Macclesfield Town at Victoria Road and again the highly popular manager will be remembered fondly.

Says Daggers' boss John Still: "I'm pleased that we are meeting the two sides with whom Keith has been best known in recent years in a week. The funeral and those two games will bring some sort of closure to what has been a very upsetting past two weeks. The Daggers manager is himself a former assistant manager of Lincoln City and still has good friends in the city.

But neither he nor his team can expect any favours when the sides clash this evening. Lincoln, now under the management of former England and Chelsea, Celtic and Blackburn striker Chris Sutton, are beginning to pull away from the foot of the table and have a pretty successful past month.

The Hereford win was their second success of the period, coupled with three draws - 2-2 away in their derby fixture with desperate, relegation-haunted neighbours Grimsby, a 1-1 home draw with Crewe and a fine away point at long-time leaders Rochdale, a game they led for a long time.

The only disappointment and reversal for Sutton's side has been a 4-0 walloping away to fast-rising Port Vale, who are making a strong, late bid for a play-off place.

Daggers should have met the Red Imps at Sincil Bank at the end of January, but the fixture was called off with ice on the pitch just a couple of hours before the scheduled kick-off with the team and many of the club's supporters well on their way.

The sides' previous meeting this season was right at the end of August and was only Daggers' fifth game of the campaign, but they were in fine fettle at the time and brushed past a Red Imps side, then under Peter Jackson's guidance in impressive style, 3-0. It turned out to be Jackson's final game in charge of Lincoln.

Lincoln have recently brought in South African striker Davide Somma in on loan from League 1 title contenders Leeds United and he has already notched a couple of goals, including one on Friday evening in the win over Hereford.

The same is true of winger Matthew Saunders, back for a second month's loan from Premier League Fulham. Saunders supplied the other two goals in the Hereford victory, but his second month's spell with the club runs out after tonight's game and Sutton is trying to extend the stay to a third month.

Sutton is unlikely to tinker much with that successful line-up, although his number two, like himself a vastly experienced Premier performer, central defender Ian Pearce, once of Blackburn, West Ham and Fulham had to come off late on.

The much travelled Drewe Broughton, who had a loan spell with Daggers during the Garry Hill era has joined the Red Imps recently from Rotherham.

Fans are advised that there is a long detour on the A1 from 10pm on Tuesday which takes them through Melton Mowbray from Grantham to Stamford. The A17 out of Lincoln then A15 to Peterborough might be a better alternative.

Stockport referee Scott Mathieson, the official who called off the first meeting on January 30 is re-appointed for this fixture. The first time he has refereed the Daggers this campaign.
