Daggers lose to late Arsenal goal

Posted on: Tue 03 Aug 2010

The Daggers were beaten by a good young Arsenal side in their latest friendly with the winning goal coming four minutes from time.

The Daggers signalled their intentions early on when Stewart Lewis attempted a dripping effort from 20 yards which went just over the visitor's goal. Gavin Tomlin was next to try his luck when he shot on the turn but his effort went straight at Shea.

In the 19th Minute slightly against the run of play Jay Simpson put Sanchez Watt through and he went round Tony Roberts and slotted the ball into the net.

Mark Arber went close on the half hour with a header which Shea mishandled and Arber's second effort was cleared off the line by Ignasi Miquel. The Daggers were doing most of the attacking at this stage and Danny Green saw his effort go just wide of the post.

On the stroke of half time Rhys Murphy thought he had doubled Arsenal's lead when his shot cannoned off the crossbar and bounced clear.

The Daggers got their deserved equaliser four minutes after the break. Romain Vincelot beat Gavin Hoyte in the air to powerfully head home Damien McCrory's cross after a good move started by former Gunner Abu Ogogo.

The game could have gone either way as both sides attacked looking for a winner. Strikers Roary Deacon and Benik Afobe came on for Arsenal amongst a host of other substitutions and immediately made an impression. Deacon got past Ogogo and cut a low ball back to Afobe whose shot on the turn was somehow saved by Roberts.

Six minutes from time Deacon scored the winner when he fired in a shot from 20 yards which somehow found it's way into the net.

The Daggers twice went close before the final whistle. Arber's header went just wide of the upright then Vincelot dribbled the ball inside the area and saw his shot and Nurse's follow-up saved by Shea.
