What Happened Next?

Following the Daggers only previous play off final against Doncaster Rovers, the Daggers started the process of becoming a full time side. Only Tony Roberts remains at the Club from the side who met Doncaster at the Britannia Stadium on May 10th 2003.

Here we take a look at what has happened to the players who were in the side since that day.

Tony Roberts
Robbo is still plying his trade at the Daggers after 460 appearances

Tim Cole
Tim moved to Thurrock in August 2007 after helping the Daggers win the Conference. Four months later he moved across Essex to Billericay but now retired from playing and still works at Smithfield as a meat porter.

Lee Matthews
Matthers moved to Hornchurch for £15,000 in October 2003 then on to Grays Athletic before retiring due to an ongoing knee problem

Tarkan Mustafa
Tarks left the Daggers in May 2004 and signed for ambitious Hornchurch. He suffered a long term injury and was released when financial troubles hit the Urchins. In August 2005 he signed for Aldershot Town where he played for the Shots in their Conference Play off semi final defeat to Carlisle United in 2006. Since then he's played for Billericay Town, Lewes, Worthing, Thurrock, Eastleigh, Clapton, Leyton. In 2008 he moved to Redbridge and played in the 2008 Ryman League Division One North play off final against Canvey Island and then joined the Islanders this season.

Lee Goodwin
Gooders retired due to an ongoing knee problem at the end of the 2007/8 season. He is the only Dagger to appear in the Ryman League, the Conference and the Football league. He is currently the coach at Blue Square Braintree and is trying to arrange a testimonial here at the start of next season.

Paul Terry
"Brother of" moved to Yeovil Town for a five-figure fee in August 2003. He played over 100 games for the Glovers before returning to East London with Leyton Orient. He is currently at Rushden & Diamonds whom he played for in the Conference play off Semi Final last week.

John McGrath
On loan John, returned to Aston Villa after the play off final but joined the Daggers opponents in that game, Doncaster Rovers, a week later. He had a loan spell at Shrewsbury Town before joining Kidderminster in January 2005. He moved back to Ireland and played for Limerick but then rejoined former Daggers manager Garry Hill at Weymouth in January 2006. He moved to Tamworth the following close season then onto Burton Albion a year later where he still plays.

Mark Janney
Mark left the Daggers in the 2005 close season after failing to agree on a new contract. He had spells at Heybridge Swifts and Thurrock where he made 30 appearances. He moved to Hornchurch in 2006 and is still at the Urchins 145 appearances later.

Mark Stein
The Double scorer in the first leg left the Daggers in October 2003 and played a few games for Waltham Forest whilst obtaining his Sports science degree. In June 2007 he took over the post as physio at Barnet but was released from the position along with manager, Ian Hendon, a fortnight before the end of last season.

Danny Shipp
Danny left the club in 2004 and joined Hornchurch. When financial troubles hit the Urchins he moved to Leyton FC. He joined Weymouth in October 2005 to play one game before giving up the game.

Steve West
Steve left the club in 2003 and joined Hornchurch. When financial troubles hit the Urchins he moved to Grays Athletic. He moved to Fisher Athletic then East Thurrock and subsequently Eastleigh. He became player/assistant manager at Sutton United in May 2008 then returned to being just a player at Margate during the 2009 close season. Steve rejoined East Thurrock in September 2009 as player/coach.

Substitutes

Steve Heffer
Heffs was surprisingly released after the final and joined Thurrock. In 2006 he teamed up with Matt Jones and Jason Broom at Billericay Town. He had a spell at Brentwood before joining Great Wakering Rovers in September 2009 where he remains.

Mark Smith
Smudge left the Daggers in October 2003 and rejoined his former side Stevenage Borough. He moved to Hitchin Town then onto Boreham Wood in the summer of 2005 becoming player-coach in 2007. He left in September 2008 and joined Cambridge City but returned to Hitchin Town at the start of the 2009/10 season where he still plays at 41 years old.

Paul Gothard
Goths joined Thurrock in August 2003 where he remained for a season. He moved to Billericay Town during the 2004 close season then emigrated in 2007. He joined local side Warkworth in New Zealand then in July 2009 he signed a one year deal with Auckland City and represented them in the FIFA World Club Championships in November.

Ashley Vickers
Ashley left the Daggers at the end of the 2005/6 season and teamed up with former Daggers manager Garry Hill at Weymouth on a one year deal. He extended the deal by another year the following April. On March 4th 2008 he moved to Eastleigh then subsequently joined Newport County in August 2008. In March 2009, after 22 appearances he joined Dorchester as player-assistant manager then took over as manager in November 2009 following Roy O'Brien's departure.

Danny Hill
Danny left the Daggers in October 2004 and signed for Hornchurch. Despite their financial problems in October that year, he stayed until the end of the season. He took up plumbing as a full time occupation and then played semi professional for Heybridge Swifts, Billericay Town then Harlow Town until March 2008. Danny still turns out regularly for the Spurs Legends team
