Southend United preview

Posted on: Fri 24 Jul 2009

After six away friendly matches the Daggers are back on home soil as we welcome Southend United to the London Borough of Barking & Dagenham Stadium. Saturday's match is the first of three home pre-season friendlies with Birmingham City and Leyton Orient scheduled to visit us next week.

Upon arriving at the ground this weekend you will notice a big change to the Pondfield Road end as the on-going work for our new stand continues. Just this week the steel work arrived and the structure has started to be erected. You can see photos on this website.

This is one of a number of changes around the club including our new signings, who most Daggers supporters will see for the first time.

The Daggers pre-season so far has been very successful with four victories and two defeats. A full first squad have recorded wins at Concord Rangers, Boreham Wood and Mangotsfield United. Meanwhile a Daggers XI won at Thurrock, however just a couple of miles down the road at Aveley we were defeated 0-3 at Mill Field. Our most recent friendly was a Daggers XI v Grays Athletic match at the New Recreation Ground with the home side scoring a late winner in a 2-1 win.

For our visitors their pre-season started at Great Wakering Rovers and a 4-0 win. Victories at Witham Town and Canvey Island followed while a Dougie Freedman goal was enough to defeat Chelmsford City last Saturday at Melbourne Park.

The Shrimpers only home friendly came last Wednesday night against Ipswich Town with the Tractor Boys leaving Roots Hall with a 2-0 win.
