Posted on: Thu 07 May 2009

Wayne Burnett has joined Dagenham & Redbridge as Academy manager, a role vacated by Robbie Garvey upon his appointment as manager of Braintree three weeks ago.

Wayne was born in Lambeth and began his playing career with Leyton Orient as a youngster, and represented England at youth level. From there he moved Blackburn Rovers, Plymouth Argyle, Bolton Wanderers, Huddersfield Town and Grimsby Town. It was with the Mariners that he scored the winning golden goal in the 1998 Football League Trophy final at Wembley Stadium against Bournemouth. Wayne played 314 games in 13 years in the professional game before dropping down to the Conference to play for Woking, Grays Athletic and Fisher Athletic. In 2004 Burnett made a return to the pro game signing for Peterborough United on a non contract basis although he only made one appearance for the club before leaving.

Burnett moved into the managerial career with Fisher Athletic in 2004, winning the Southern League Division One East. He then joined Dulwich Hamlet but returned to Fisher for a second time in May 2007. His last appointment was at Grays Athletic where he stayed for four months until February this year.
