Considering that in a total of 175 previous appearances for the club Danny Foster has just scored twice, there wouldn't have been many who would have put their money on the full-back becoming a two goal hero. But Foster did just that as the Daggers had to work extremely hard to overcome Luton Town at the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham Stadium.
John Still's selection included a first start for the on loan Doug Loft. Loft came close to a home debut goal during the opening fifteen minutes. The midfielder was found by Sam Saunders and he drilled a low shot that was pushed behind by Lewis Price.
The Daggers had looked the more likely to score in the opening stages. Ben Strevens saw a header cleared off the line by Rossi Jarvis while Magnus Okuonghae could only head the ball back to Price from the rebound.
But the Daggers did get an early goal although its source would have been a surprise to most Dagenham followers. Foster picked up a low Matt Ritchie cross inside Luton's penalty area. Like a tricky midfielder he tip-toed his way past a couple of defenders before blasting the ball in with his left foot.
Luton though were a big and physical side and their response to Dagenham's goal almost brought an equaliser. Seconds after Foster's strike, Asa Hall hit a shot that beat Tony Roberts but hit a post. Jarvis smashed the loose ball over.
Tom Craddock perhaps should have levelled things up but he blast over from ten yards while the Daggers rode their luck ten minutes before the break. Ian Henderson's shot took a deflection off Okuonghae forcing Tony Roberts to stop the ball with his feet. Mark Arber was on hand to help out his keeper by conceding a corner. Even then the Daggers just about escaped, Hall finding himself with a free header which he was unable to test Roberts with.
Both teams started the second half finding one of their strikers through on goal. But both Jon Nurse and Craddock saw their efforts saved. Indeed the save by Roberts was particularly brave as the keeper had injured himself during the first half and spent the remainder of the game hobbling on one leg.
The Daggers were to double their lead just before the hour mark. A super cross-field pass from Ritchie found Saunders on the left. Saunders drove to the by-line. His cross reached the near post where he found the now prolific Foster flying in to ensure the ball crept over the line.
John Still had to deal with another injury straight after the goal. This time it was Arber who was forced to leave the field and his place was taken by Anwar Uddin.
The Daggers couldn't reorganise in time as Luton got back in the game. They worked the ball neatly from one side of the penalty area to the other and Henderson was on hand to provide an accomplished finish.
From there on it was the Hatters who were desperately searching for an equaliser. They almost got it through their centre half Ian Roper whose effort was cleared away from the goal line by Matt Ritchie. Meanwhile Craddock turned Okuonghae who was helped by Uddin who took all the sting out the forward's shot with a fantastic block.
Craddock had another opportunity but the Daggers got their organisation just right to see the game through. The win should put the team in good heart for the visit of Wycombe this coming Tuesday.
