Two home wins in a week is as much as John Still could ask for from his team. The score line was the same as the Crawley result and another hardworking display ensured the Daggers secured a deserved victory against a team that hadn't been previously beaten on their travels, and are widely expected to challenge for a promotion spot come the end of the season.
Once again Dagenham enjoyed a start that brought them an early goal. In what proved to be the pattern for the ninety minutes the goal came from a corner. Sam Saunders whipped in a dangerous cross and Dave Rainford got the ball ahead of Morecambe keeper Steven Drench, and midfielder's intervention ensured that the Daggers took the lead.
Morecambe responded well to the goal. After almost scoring in the first couple of minutes, Jake Leberl skewing narrowly over his own crossbar, their most likely goalscoring threat early on came from Wayne Curtis. Curtis struck straight at Tony Roberts when well placed in the area, and when his latter cross-shot did beat Roberts minutes later, Scott Griffith's superb last gasp intervention ensured that neither Curtis nor the awaiting Danny Carlton would score.
The Daggers did have the ball in the back of the net midway through the first half. Paul Benson had lobbed Drench only for his effort to be ruled out due to an offside decision. Benson had another go, heading a Saunders cross towards goal. It looked like Drench had made a save to deny the Dagenham forward, although a goal-kick was awarded.
The home side suffered a set-back just before the break however, as Morecambe fashioned an equaliser in a similar vein to how Dagenham scored theirs. Michael Twiss swung in a corner in which Carlton beat Roberts to the ball to head his side level.
John Still's half-time talk must have banished any Daggers thoughts of that equaliser as they retook the lead just seven minutes into the second half. Almost inevitably the goal came from a corner, this time taken by Sam Sloma, and the ball fell once again to Rainford, who smashed the ball home from six yards.
The Daggers went on to secure the win in a second half performance where perhaps the only criticism was that they were unable to score a third. It wasn't for want of trying or indeed for lack of chances. Probably the best opportunity fell to Craig Mackail-Smith who benefited from Benson's hard work. Mackail-Smith found himself in the penalty are with only Drench to beat, but the Morecambe keeper did well in diverting the ball wide of goal.
Benson also went close to adding a third. The forward latched onto the ball following a mix up between Drench and Chris Blackburn, and his strike looked on its way to securing Benson's sixth goal of the season. However, Blackburn's interception made up for his earlier error and prevented from Benson from scoring.
Morecambe brought on substitute David McNiven in an attempt to provide a greater attacking threat. Their best chance fell to Garry Thompson whose twenty yard strike was held by Roberts. The Daggers held out quite comfortably in the end and they were able to celebrate yet another victory.
