John was captain of the Coventry City side that won the FA Youth cup in 1987 and was awarded a professional contract with the Sky Blues. Whilst at Highfield Road, he completed a training course in physiotherapy where he gained his physio qualifications and became assistant physio for four years.

He left Coventry to take over as first team physio at Southend United where he remained for nine-and-a-half years. After 18 months at Hornchurch in a similar role, he became the Daggers first full time physio in August 2004 and remains a key member of the staff.
