Dagenham & Redbridge played out a goalless draw with Luton on a night when former Dagger Paul Benson’s return was cut short by a red card.
The hosts made four changes from the loss to Carlisle, with Luke Howell
, Ian Gayle Ashley Hemmings
and Joe Widdowson
With just 15 seconds on the clock Scott Doe
’s headed clearance went skyward allowing Ryan Hall a chance to latch onto it but the winger narrowly diverted his effort just wide of the left post.
Six minutes later Benson thought he had nodded Luton in front from a corner but his header was cleared off the line by Widdowson.
After a foul on Abu Ogogo
the hosts were given a free-kick 25 yards out in the 19th minute but Billy Bingham
fired the effort straight at Elliot Justham in the Luton goal.
Seven minutes later Howell headed Joe Widdowson
’s cross from the left into the path of Jamie Cureton
put the veteran striker shot into the side netting.
Fourteen minutes remained in the half when Elliot Lee swerved past Gayle before setting up Shaun Whalley in the box but the Luton substitute slipped as he went to shoot and his scuffed effort dribbled wide.
Hatters captain Steve McNulty was shown a yellow card with 34 minutes gone when he fouled Cureton as he attempted to latch on to a long ball forward.
Benson’s return to Victoria Road ended prematurely as he was giving his marching orders three minutes later for an accidental high foot on Gayle.
On the stroke of half time the home team had a penalty appeal turned down when Cureton’s efforts appeared to be blocked by the hands of a Luton player.
The forward was in the thick of the action once more 11 minutes into the second half when he beat McNulty to Abu Ogogo
’s long throw but his close range effort was well saved by Justham.
The Hatters came close to breaking the deadlock in the 67th minute when Elliot Lee played the ball into Mark Cullen but the ball rebounded to Lee on the edge of the box.
Lee struck a curling effort with his first touch but it went just high of the crossbar.
He went closer still from a similar distance less than three minutes later forcing Mark Cousins
into action with a dipping free-kick.
With just five minutes Ashley Hemmings
drilled a low ball toward goal that was deflected narrowly over the bar by Michael Harriman for a corner that was cleared.
The result sees Daggers remain in 15th place in League Two ahead of the weekend trip to Newport County.
