Dagenham and Redbridge progress to round two of the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy after a 4-1 victory over local rivals Colchester United.
The Daggers were one-nil down at the break after U’s captain Brian Wilson put the League One side ahead with a fine free-kick.
But a resurgent Dagenham side produced an excellent second half comeback and goals from Medy Elito
, Brian Saah
, Abu Ogogo
and Louis Dennis
secured the win.
Daggers boss Wayne Burnett made five changes to the side that lost 3-0 at Mansfield Town at the weekend but it took a while for the game to get going, with neither goalkeeper really being tested.
Jack Connors, who looked bright at left back all evening, sent a teasing ball in behind the Colchester defence after 36 minutes but Obafemi failed to connect with good delivery.
U’s captain Brian Wilson gave the visitors the lead two minutes later with an excellent free-kick past a helpless Jordan Seabright
from just outside the box.
The free-kick was the difference at the break, but Burnett’s side began the second half in much better fashion than the first, pressuring from the off.
fired a shot just past the post early on, but the ex-Colchester man made sure he didn’t miss when he rose highest at the back post to head home Gavin Hoyte’s expert cross after 53 minutes.
The tie turned on its head just after the hour when former Dagger Magnus Okuonghae was sent off after receiving a second yellow for pulling back Zavon Hines
From then on it was all Dagenham and it took the hosts only two minutes to capitalize on the man advantage when Hines’ low ball across the box was tapped in by Brian Saah
, his first goal for the club.
The win was sealed with twelve minutes remaining when captain Abu Ogogo
got on the end of Hines’ cross to tap in at the near post.
Daggers completed the win when Hines expertly found substitute Louis Dennis
who slipped the ball under the onrushing goalkeeper Sam Walker with his virtually his first touch of the game.
A superb second 45 by the Daggers and a much deserved win, on to round two.
