Romain Padovani’s first half header settled this encounter and it proved to be a missed opportunity against a Pompey side that was there for the taking.
Chris Dickson came in for his first league start, replacing Lawson D’Ath in the starting line-up which lost 1-0 at home to Torquay at the weekend.
Pompey dominated the opening exchanges without causing Chris Lewington
too much danger in the Daggers goal, and it was the visitors who had the first opportunity.
The hosts failed to clear their lines allowing Rhys Muprhy time to dink the ball in from midway inside the half and Dickson got on the end of it, however directed his header straight into the arms of Trevor Carson.
That was a rare foray forward for the visitors, and Luke Howell
blocked a goalbound Romain Padovani shot, before Lewington did well to thwart Agyemang after he’d slipped the attentions of Scott Doe
and Brian Saah
Ricky Holmes proved to be a menace the whole half for the Daggers back line and it was only a fine save from Lewington which denied the tricky winger a goal after he unleashed an effort from the edge of the area.
But just as the clock was ticking down for half time the hosts broke the deadlock, and it was another headed goal conceded.
Holmes was the man with the delivery and Padovani wasn’t picked up by the Daggers who headed into the ground and past a stranded Lewington.
Burnett made the tactical move to introduce D’Ath at the break, but the hosts thought they’d doubled their lead when Agyemang netted, however it was rightly ruled out for offside.
The Daggers began to enjoy more time in the Pompey half, and Dickson spurned a great opportunity to level after Hines’ free-kick had been only been cleared straight to the former Charlton Athletic forward in the box, but he fired well over.
Minutes later Saah saw a header creep just wide of the target with home ‘keeper Carson briefly worried.
Their best spell of the game for Burnett’s side came in the closing stages with Doe flicking on a Hines corner only for Carson to gather, while Lawson D’Ath was carded for a dive in the area in a desperate attempt for the Daggers to nick a point two
minutes from time.
Five minutes stoppage time was awarded, but it was Pompey who almost made sure of all three points when Padovani struck from all of 35 yards, but the effort just crept over the bar.
