Dagenham & Redbridge pushed Brentford all the way but substitute Farid El-Alagui’s stoppage time goal ensured the Bees progressed to the second round of the Capital One Cup at the expense of the Daggers at Griffin Park.
Manager Wayne Burnett made just one change to Saturday’s side which lost 3-1 at Fleetwood as Jake Reed replaced Billy And it was the visitors who took the lead after 15 minutes when debutant Ben Nugent put the ball in his own net.
The goal was originally ruled out with Rhys Murphy believed to have been in an offside position, but referee Patrick Miller overruled his assistant and allowed the goal to stand.
That was how it remained at the break but Daggers were unfortunate not to double their tally five minutes into the second period when Josh Scott’s header struck the bar with Bees goalkeeper Jack Bonham beaten.
But the League One hosts pulled level through El-Alagui when he tapped in from close range as the visitors failed to deal with former Dagger Sam Saunders’ corner with an hour played.
Only three minutes had passed though when Burnett’s side found themselves behind as Martin Fillo shot past Chris Lewington from the edge of the area.
However, Daggers gave themselves a lifeline with nine minutes remaining when substitute Brian Woodall played in Scott who added a simple finish.
Lewington denied Saunders superbly from a late free-kick but with extra time looking inevitable, El-Alagui headed home another Saunders free-kick deep into stoppage time to break Dagenham hearts.
