In their 250th Football League game, the Daggers gave a disappointing performance as they fell to a 2-1 defeat away to Torquay United.
Danny Stevens opened the scoring for the Gulls on 37 minutes with a close range finish, but Matt Saunders equalised against the run of play midway through the second half. Torquay got what they deserved 10 minutes from time as Abu Ogogo put through his own net.
On a chilly Devonshire afternoon at Plainmoor, John Still fielded the same starting XI that snatched all three points at home against Fleetwood last weekend, with Jake Reed keeping his place alongside striker Sam Williams
The Gulls flew out the traps and immediately put the visitors under pressure. There wasn’t even a minute on the clock before Rene Howe had Chris Lewington beaten, his shot however crashed against the woodwork.
The Daggers weathered the storm well though, numbing the tempo of Torquay and even threatened themselves. Medy Elito’s early effort was straight at ‘keeper Poke, while Jake Reed failed to make the most of his sight on goal.
With very little action throughout the first half, Torquay broke the deadlock 10 minutes before the break. Rene Howe caused chaos in the Daggers box, and after it wasn’t dealt with by Lewington or Wilkinson, the ball fell to Danny Stevens, who couldn’t miss from two yards.
Although the Daggers had slightly more attacking intent at the start of the second half, it was Torquay who had the first attempt. Rene Howe, who was causing their defensive line all sorts of problems, had a shot flash wide of Lewington’s post.
Under the cosh, John Still bought on Jake Caprice for his debut and Brian Woodall, to bolster his attack. Nathan Craig almost headed in a second after the double substitution, before Matt Saunders came close at the other end.
Just minutes later though, and the Daggers were level, as Saunders produced the good this time around. After almost levelling moments before, Saunders picked up the ball outside the area, took aim and struck a shot which hit the inside of the post before nestling in the net.
The Gulls regained their lead in unfortunate circumstances on 79 minutes. Substitute Niall Thompson did well on the ball before firing in a shot, which hit the stuck out leg of captain Abu Ogogo, to send it past ‘keeper Lewington and put the hosts 2-1 up.
Despite seeing more of the ball in the closing stages of the game, none of the Daggers players could step up to the plate to find an equaliser, condemning John Still to a 2-1 defeat.
