John Still made four changes to the Dagenham & Redbridge side that beat Bradford 4-3 on the weekend. Jake Reed, Mat Saunders and Danny J Green were all given starts , whilst Brian Woodall was recalled to the starting eleven.
Dagenham’s best chance of the 1st half came after just 20 seconds whenBrian Woodallforced a smart save from the Shrimpers ‘keeper after a low strike from the edge of the box. After that, it went downhill for The Daggers. Britt Assombalonga put the ball past Lewington in the Daggers goal, only for Femi to clear the ball away at the last minute.
However, this good fortune was not to last as Ryan Cresswell put the hosts in front after 17 minutes with a firm header from the penalty spot. This was deserved as Southend began to take control of the game.
Matt Saunders then forced Paul Smith into action late in the 1st half with a thunderous drive from 25 yards out. The Daggers finished the 1st half brightly, but couldn’t breakdown a resolute Southend defence.
After 62 minutes Southend doubled their lead when Assombalonga capitalised on a sliced clearance from Luke Wilkinson. The ball fell to the 19 year old with the goal gaping and he simply couldn’t miss from 12 yards out.
Shortly after, John Still brought on Dom Green, Dwight Gayle and Sam Williams. The subs gave the Daggers a new lease of life and Dom Green was unlucky not to pull one back for the visitors after a good ball through from Elito fell to him. Again, Paul Smith made a good save and denied the substitute. This was followed by a flurry of chances for the away side, with Dwight Gayle striking the bar with a glancing header. Sam Williams had arguable the best chance to pull one back when good work from Gayle led to the striker having a clear sight of goal, however Smith came out on top again with a fine save high to his right.
Femi managed to hook a late shot from Martin off the line, but it was to no avail as Southend held off the Daggers to go through to the 3rd round.
