Former Dagger Gavin Tomlin scored a first half double to help Southend United to a 3-0 win at the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham Stadium
Southend were gifted the perfect start as with just one minute gone Tomlin grabbed his first of the afternoon when we took advantage of some poor defending from the Daggers. Tomlin’s shot deflected off Doe and flew past Chris Lewington in goal.
The Shrimpers then doubled their lead after 14 minutes and again it was Tomlin that wheeled away celebrating.
Britt Assombalonga brought the ball down and ran unchallenged down the left before a neat one-two with Marc Laird saw him play through Tomlin who tapped in from close range..
The Daggers failed to create chances in the first half, Luke Howell hit a weak shot wide and Matt Saunders free kick was punched away with relative ease by Paul Smith in the Southend goal.
Daggers boss John Still made two changes at the break with Jake Caprice and Brian Woodall on for Michael Spillane and Jake Reed, the changes seemed to pick the Daggers up as they started to create chance. The Daggers looked like they were going to grab a goal with Doe having a great chance but his effort when just over the bar.
The deciding goal came in the 55th minute and it was the hosts that scored, Kevan Hurst hit a great strike which found the top corner of the net.
The Daggers still had chances to score in the closing minutes of the game; Sam Williams headed well but could only hit the crossbar. Jake Caprice found himself un marked at the back post but he couldn’t get on the end of a Femi cross.
