Dagenham & Redbridge 2 (Stevens 50, Benson - pen 52)
Mansfield Town 0

The Daggers ended a long and hard season with a comfortable win over relegated Mansfield Town . In a ground full of contrasting emotions the Daggers secured the first ever Football League double thanks to two early second half goals from their strikers. It means that they were able to enjoy their well deserved lap of honour, in full knowledge that they can look forward to another year at this level.

The Daggers started the afternoon pretty positively and really could have opened the scoring during the opening few minutes. Most of their opportunities came via the right boot of Sam Saunders. His first cross was headed towards goal by Paul Benson only for a super save from Jason White who tipped the ball onto the bar.

Mark Arber had a couple of headers that failed to bring the first goal as the Daggers continued to press during the early stages. Mansfield rarely threatened Tony Roberts' goal and had to wait until 20 minutes to register their first attempt. That was through Matthew Hamshaw who shot high and wide.

That was where most of the action during the first half ended. Jon Boardman almost found the back of the net, heading over from close range. At the other end Boardman was held off the ball by Nathan Arnold, who swivelled and fired over the crossbar.

The Daggers couldn’t have wished for a better start to the second half. Benson was unlucky to see volley come off a post, but from the resulting corner, Strevens leapt the highest to power a header into the far corner.

It wasn’t long before the Daggers were celebrating a second goal. Benson found himself through on goal and was pulled back by Jake Buxton inside the area. The referee had little hesitation in sending the Mansfield skipper off. Benson himself took the spot-kick, fending off a host of candidates including Tony Roberts, and rammed the ball home directly into the middle of the goal.

The visitors, unsurprisingly, were looking rather demoralised and Benson curled another shot just off target. The forward was somehow denied another goal later on after yet another Saunders cross had White struggling to get to the ball. Dominc Green came on for an impressive cameo including skipping past Chris Wood forcing White into making a save.

White produced a vast array of stops to keep the score at two, including yet another outstretched finger to stop Strevens from scoring his second. And while the Daggers couldn’t get a second, the supporters got what they wanted as Lee Goodwin came on for the final few minutes, securing the man of the match in the process; the majority of the 3,451 in full agreement with that decision!
